Monster in the Closet
Joia Ramchandani

I created a toy designed to help kids dispel their fear of monsters. The idea is that a child can wake up in the middle of the night, after experiencing a bad dream, and can conquer his fears by opening his very own monster box (night light included). The child draws his demons on the provided sketch pad and can choose one of several means to vanquish his monster. He can make the offending creature a) transform into a funny caricature (with happy messages coming out of its head, in thought bubbles : ), b) imprison the monster, or c) send it to outer space. These “battle” techniques rely on the properties of color complementation, acid-base pH reactions, and UV light fluorescence. When the child is finished facing his demons, he closes his monster box and it shakes with a clinking sound (ghost-buster style) to indicate the monster is trapped inside!
